Transition of Trust

The quality of Trust that a person holds almost decides the very quality of life, irrespective of the material comforts affordable!
This trust takes strange shapes and forms (all of them quite abstract in nature!) in one’s experience. We even feel perplexed whether it was a ‘belief’ or a ‘trust’!
I found the question quoted below to be one that seems to touch one of the core issues involving trust. The transition (of that trust), when it happens within a person, it often reaches stagnation at most unlikely places! And the consequences (I would prefer to call it as ‘residues’, because it is the very residues that contributes to the bulk of our ‘karmic-natured-attitudes’!), solidify the stagnation! Quite fuzzy, I agree. But, then, trust itself is quite fuzzy, if only one were to reflect deep enough about it!
When I look at the question, the answer occurs, (of course the way it does, to me only, not necessarily the right one, the apt one, or even an agreeable one!).
But, very few are left out of this maze of trust and belief; I hope there you would agree. Perhaps, some of us feel too ‘sentimental’ to even touch it, to venture pondering over it, fearing that vulnerability!
Certain aspects of trust, I chose to merely make a passing reference, leaving it to the alert mind to grasp its significance, in my answer (call it the ways of a mystic or whatever! A ‘Guru’ is usually quite familiar with these aspects, being the one grappled with the problem of begetting that ‘trust’!).

Maybe the feeling of contended solitude can only be reached through a series of incidences with people?
that make you realise that it's only yourself you can trustdo you agree?

My answer:
Trust is understood in a deeper way only with intense life experiences.Initially, it is expected from others, instinctively.... like a child innocently trusts its parents, elders etc. With experience, this trust declines, with growing awareness about how people give priorities to their own personal desires surpassing even empathy, fellow consideration etc. Then comes, this phase of 'contended solitude’. This is a difficult phase, and if a person happens to go deeper within, then the 'Trust' now widens its scope in a big way, indescribably big! When that happens, now the trust on others happens effortlessly and without any expectation, or even the need to verify the trustworthiness of others! Consequences do not matter at all. When such trust is betrayed by others, the perception affords instant clarity of the cause, and forgiveness is also simultaneous! Quite incredible, but true, and purely experiential too!

Childhood Snatchers!

That is what we the present day elders have turned out to be!
The famous songs, which reminds a person of one’s own sweet memories of childhood are no more relevant! (“Koi loutadey mere beetey huwhey din”, or “Yeh doulat bhi le lo, ye shohrat bhi lelo, bhaley cheen lo mujh se meri jawani, magar mujh ko de do wo bachpan ki yaadein….”)

These children of today, may not be left with any such memories at all! I can hope for some attention only when I am able to quote with some authenticity. I paste two articles by eminent people, and the more knowledgeable of them yet again seeks to quote a ‘spiritual’ poem!

Is it possible that we create at least a very nominal space for children in their routine daily life, how ever minimal our efforts turn out to be? In doing so, we send out a powerful thought process, which could snowball into a positive movement. Already there are a few institutions that have taken very powerful measures. And astoundingly enough there are courageous people to subscribe to it. There is a school, in South India, which assures that students face only one public exam (the 10th standard/Matriculation) as the earliest one. The same institution runs yet another informal school which does not fetch any recognised educational qualification at all! Yet there is a waiting list for admissions! The later one however assures that the child would grow into a ‘self-sufficient’ person irrespective of the outside situation! I am not at all canvassing for this or even such schools at present. Is it possible that we subscribe to this concept positively at least in our thought level! It is not really too much to ask when we have that collective accountability for having made those wonderful songs totally redundant!

‘I only want to enjoy my childhood, ma’
(Dear co-parents, some of us might hear a small, fading voice making yet another attempt to reach us)
Inumella Sesikala
Amma, I don’t want to go to school.
I am just a child, Ma. I want someone to tell me stories and teach me. I want to watch tadpoles and butterflies and know what they eat, where they sleep. I want to climb a hill and catch a cloud to see what it is made of.
I want to wait with my hands in the stream and feel the fish swimming.
I want to run with the puppies, sing with the birds, and play with paper-boats in the rain.
I want to lie down on the soft green grass and hear the wind whisper.
Only then I want to learn more about them from the printed word.
Only after my imagination is fired, my thirst to know more has begun, a seed of ‘Why?’ is planted in my brain.
Amma, I feel trapped in the prison-like classroom. I feel my spirit slowly weakening with the monotonous teaching. Often, when I ask a basic question our teachers say, “No time for all that. Let us finish the syllabus.”
I get tired of studying just for marks without pausing to truly understand.
I want to go to the museum with my classmates and hear my teacher explain the stories of the artefacts.
I want plenty of nature trips where real Biology classes would be held.
I want to see colourful videos of volcanic eruptions and deep-sea dwellings.
I want our whole school to visit together the historic and cultural places in my city.
I want to learn astronomy after looking through a telescope once.
I don’t want to just read them in my textbooks; I want to see, hear, touch, smell and taste whatever I can. I want to experience.
Why can’t the school make at least one such trip every year?
And, I cannot stoop down anymore to carry my school sack. My back is ready to break. Why should I carry all the books everyday? Why can’t we have only two subjects per day? Or, why don’t we have lockers like in the Western schools? And, why should I squeeze in that over-crowded auto?
But, Amma, growing up no longer seems to be fun. I see only more of homework, winter projects, summer classes, weekly tests, monthly tests, quarterly, half-yearly and annual exams, external competitive exams, more tests, more competitions, more pressure, more stress…
When can I sing, paint, dance, swim, or cycle?
When I can just play cricket or even hide-and-seek?
What happened to that minimum sleep that you always say a child needs?
Why should I always study, study?
Amma, I am scared of increasing atrocities by untrustworthy teachers, ragging-raving seniors, acid-loving nuts, perverted adults…
Ma, right now, I don’t want to be a doctor, engineer or anything else.
I just want to feel safe and secure, play and learn without any stress before I become an adult like you.
I only want to enjoy my childhood, Ma.

Need for creativity in classroom
The former President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, writes:
I was happy to see the article “I only want to enjoy my childhood, ma” by Inumella Sesikala (Open Page, Nov. 8). I liked the article very much, which is a dream of every child. Creativity of children has to come out from the classroom. Some of us had such opportunities. Our children should go to primary school only at the age of six. Till then, we have to promote creativity of the children with great teachers and an innovative classroom environment.
Yesterday, when I was reading the book Spiritual Intelligence, The Ultimate Intelligence by Danah Zohar and Ian Marshall, I came across the poem, “The Student’s prayer.”
“The young son of a Chilean biologist, Umberto Maturana, became unhappy at school because he felt his teachers were making it impossible for him to learn. They wanted to teach him what they knew, rather than drawing out what he needed to learn. As a result Maturana wrote “The Student’s Prayer”, of which this translation is an abridged version. It perfectly expresses the spiritually intelligent individual’s response to the conforming pressures of parents, teachers, bosses or the crowd.
The Student’s Prayer
Don’t impose on me what you know,
I want to explore the unknown
And be the source of my own discoveries.
Let the known be my liberation, not my slavery.
The world of your truth can be my limitation;
Your wisdom my negation.
Don’t instruct me; let’s walk together.
Let my richness begin where yours ends.
Show me so that I can stand
On your shoulders.
Reveal yourself so that I can be
Something different.
You believe that every human being
Can love and create.
I understand, then, your fear
When I ask you to live according to your wisdom.
You will not know who I am
By listening to yourself.
Don’t instruct me; let me be.
Your failure is that I be identical to you.” I thought, there is a connectivity among young hearts even beyond ocean — “I only want to enjoy my childhood, ma” and “The Student’s Prayer.”

Good enough to be boring!

Askers keep amazing me!
The very question in its latent contradiction, seemed to de-mystify the elusive root cause of boredom itself!
I should be the one to thank the asker, for a clue that I had been hunting for! Not that I was all that innocent, but to find a way to put it across in a way, that is easily (rather irrefutably) understood by others?
I hope you have a good reason now, to either agree or disagree.

Do you find "good" boring?
My reply:
That's a very " good " clue!It could be no where else I guess!Just that the 'goodness' is yet to reveal itself! In my attempt to 'dissect' this 'boredom' I ended up into a maze searching for an equivalent word in any of the Indian languages too! There was another word, 'sentiment' for which I am looking out for an equivalent in Indian languages!!But, I think that settles the 'source' of boredom!
Thanks!!

Batau (Shall I explain?)

Batau

“Shall I explain”

A question, and an answer that needs no further explanation.
A question of motivation, it is….
Regards,
Psn

http://in.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091109071405AASiPY0

Tell me, spiritually.. what motivates an individual to confront the challenges that most would run from?
What are those challenges?Thoughts...?

My ‘Batau”:

There was a joke. In Hindi language 'Batau' means 'tell, explain, show(how),' as a part of usage....A Hindi speaking person went to taste 'Punjabi' dishes, in a restaurant and asked 'what is today's special'. The reply was "Batau". The visitor said, "Batau". Once again the reply was "Batau". This happened for several times. Then the visitor elaborated, 'I asked what is special today, and you keep saying, "shall I explain" (the accent while pronouncing that 'batau' resembled the tone of enquiry, by the waiter)...Now the waiter elaborated, "Batau tho hai, aur kya batau?" (The dish is "batau", what else am I to elaborate). There was a dish called "Batau"........

Spirituality IS the motivation, by itself!!!

OCD test!

ज़िन्दगी भी एक नशा है मेरे दोस्त, जब चढ़ता है तो पूछो मत क्या आलम रहता है लेकिन.......
This life too is an intoxication my friend, and when it permeates in, do not ask what possesses us, but....

An intoxication like this must have crept into the asker, which triggered an obsession like थिंग that crept in him, and then he was anxious to get clarified!

Why am I obsessed with getting "dirty" so much?
Serious question. I used to have germophobia, and now it's the complete opposite. I rarely bathe, and I touch everything. Has my OCD gone 360 on me? because now i love getting my hands and feet dirty.is there a disorder named after this?is it a sign of mental illness?why does this make me feel good? (being contaminated)

My Nuska (recipe/solution):

This is not really an obsession. It is just a phase of transition, rejoicing that freedom from resistance. When acceptance deepens, there is a slight 'overdose' of tolerance. When a person suddenly becomes tolerant to music or singing, after having detested it for years, there is an urge to 'soak-in' that music for a while, and then it subsides to 'normalcy'.After a while, the optimum sense of hygiene would prevail, and then the cleaning would be need-based, or 'decided-by-situation' rather than one's own compulsive behaviour!Very few are fortunate to experience with this kind of change over! It sounds wonderful to know.

Best wishes.

Hardwork or luck, which do you prefer?

It is a very common and casual question!
If we understand the depth of it, perhaps, then for a better reason, for a longer sustaining reason, for a reason that does not impose dependence on the outside situation, we could choose hard work(otherwise, normally, we find our mind evading all our resolves to work hard !)
psn(6th November, 2009)
http://in.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091105090853AAqZgeK
Hardwork or luck, which do you prefer?
My answer:
Luck is almost like the product of hard work. Lucky to win a lottery--somebody produced that money by hard work. Lucky to be born of wonderful parents--it takes a lot of hard work to become wonderful parents! Lucky to get a seat in a crowded bus--somebody beside us undergoes the 'hard work' of standing instead of us! Lucky to be born in a prosperous country--that country is prosperous due to hard work, honesty, good team spirit of a few generations! When we decide to forgo a part of the results of our hard work, somebody else is bound to be lucky!

Complexity of Emotion-based concepts!

At the very outset, I have resolved to adhere to brevity. No point in trying out other’s patience!

I tried to look at ‘provocation’ as a violent form of temptation! To use a dramatic example, I choose to take a small incident from the war & its battles of the great epic “Mahabharata”.

Despite advice from a great being, none other than Lord Krishna himself, the divine charioteer, Arjuna could not bring upon himself to aim the fatal arrows, and unleash it upon the venerable Paterfamilias, the venerable Bhishma! Bhishma’s stature & character loomed large, clouding the vision of Arjuna. This hesitation “provoked” Krishna to climb down the chariot, take up his own weapon, the sudarsana Chakra and aim it at Bhishma! A puzzling contrast is that Bhishma, who has never known defeat, nor has ever refused an offer to combat, welcomes with open arms, bare palms, to joyously get killed by Krishna! To me, here, Bhishma’s conscious choice, a seemingly logic-defying one, represents the virtue of selfishness at its peak! (Yes! Ethics and selfishness seem to be in an endless conflict when we are torn between the two, when the choosing either of them becomes imminent, due to compulsions of situation, in our day-to-day-life routine! Selfishness in a deeper sense does advocate ethics, and then there is no inner conflict. That is the secret of our ancient mystics, the spiritual Masters!)
It is this unfair advantage to Bhishma, for which Arjuna does not like to become a root cause! He once again assures Krishna, to resume his resolve ‘not to take up arms himself’. This incident repeats several times! Then ultimately, Arjuna the sole spiritual disciple of Krishna, barely manages to grasp the complex concept of this emotional conflict, and obeys to slay Bhishma!

Some ‘ethical’ prescriptions like ‘do not nurture hate for others’ etc does not really seem to work in practical life! We need to seek better reasons, to cheerfully adopt this kind of ethics. Reasons which are not flimsy, like ‘trying to appear’ like a good person in the eyes of others! Such flimsy reasons only add up to stress within, and cause untold miseries like tension, BP, and related ailments like diabetes! That reminds me of a funny incident! We were a group chatting casually during the post feast-lunch session after a ‘match-fixing’ ceremony of a bride & groom. An elder lady was asserting ‘her’ non-availability to common causes of diabetes like tension, anger, stress, BP etc, when youngsters seated around were trying to suggest a possible cause for her mild manageable level of diabetes. I suddenly blurted out “Telling lies”! Quite unexpectedly, all the youngsters shouted “YES!”!! Despite all of us knowing too well, that this is not a logical answer, the elderly lady became a bit stiff-faced, serious and got deep into thoughts! I at once realized that I had, quite inadvertently, poked at a deep wound inside! (This lady is well known to the entire group, and is deeply respected for her grand stature, blemish-less character, stout honesty, and her health has been a constant concern of all the people around her, always! So, it is not the commonly referred meaning of “telling Lies” that caused laughter to the youngsters or the ‘stiffness’ to that lovable elderly lady!) This is the problem with trying to be ‘ethical’ for superficial reasons! It ends up causing health problems, as an immediate side-effect. I lack courage to mention the other ‘karmic’ side effects! I suppose now, it would be somewhat clear, as to what kind of ‘ethical’ error-bug that Arjuna tried to avoid, and yet needed some time to grasp a ‘better’ reason to adhere to the very same ‘ethics’ while taking the crucial decision to slay Bhishma !

It is this complexity (ethics, emotions, its concepts) that I liked to ‘bring to your kind attention’ for the present!

Agenda in Prison!

There are two ways of looking at the caption!
Yes, I seldom let go an opportunity to imprison the mind, and then let loose my own agenda leaving the mind a bit choice-less!
All that the asker meant to know was the effectiveness of psychologists who are assigned the duty of counseling the prison inmates as well as the prison officers, who become vulnerable to acquiring the unruly attitude as a sort of occupational hazard!

I did feel guilty when I had put up my answer. But very surprisingly the asker did not wait for any more answers! The fourth sloka of a time-capsule(soundarya Lahari), the legendary work of Adi Shankara, that makes a mention of a concept ‘more that what you can even ask for’ (Vaanchya sam Adhikam!) was what I was reminded of! The asker perhaps felt that he/she got more than what was asked.

It is therefore, that I am tempted to share this unusual question, and my answer to it.
I only hope that I do not inadvertently hurt anybody’s personal sentiments!

Evaluate the effectiveness of Prison Psychologists. Consider how useful these Psychologists are in ...........?
Evaluate the effectiveness of Prison Psychologists. Consider how useful these Psychologists are in terms of helping prisoners and prison officers?THANK YOU!

My answer:
Basically, the inmates of a prison are relatively more innocent ones that those outside! They just translated their thoughts into action, and got caught! There is hardly a crime that the so-called 'gentlemen' outside did not commit in their thoughts! So, the job of a psychologist is much easier dealing with those innocent ones. They are violent, gross, and perhaps appear more tough. They are already 'branded' and so, they do not have anything to lose, holding back their instinctive behavior. But if properly and systematically counseled, they can turn into wonderful beings, with long term effects, compared to most clever ones on the outside. If all the non-prisoners outside were truly good, the society would have been very exemplary. Politicians have not much of a role to play then! Only honest leaders can really survive!

Training Guns on Emotions!

It is not often, that we get a query that seeks a concerted effort at handling those unpredictable and uncontrollable emotional outbursts!
I got the opportunity to draw the asker’s attention to a glaring aspect of our present day society, which goes almost inconspicuous, and un-noticed! The absence of a structured mechanism or institution to train a person to handle emotions, to train a person to maintain that inner balance, the harmony between conflicting emotions. Without that training, the achievements, with all the logical skills seems to leave a sort of vacuum, depriving a person the joyous experience of rewards of hard work, wealth and even prosperity!
Perhaps, it is time to look at, what ingredients constituted that peace that our ancient simple life-styled ancestors enjoyed!

The question:
How do you train yourself to control your emotions?
I am a type of person who is either very happy or very sad, I want to know how to control my emotions how to not feel very sad when something bad happens, I dont think feeling very happy is a problem.Thank you

My answer:
The problem is very reasonable and well justified! Please see, there is no institution, school, or organisation which imparts emotional training in a structured way! We have very good institutions to teach us all the logical skills to handle the material aspect of life. Even handling others to encash their emotions is taught logically, through courses like MBA etc! Psychology teaches us to manage imbalanced people, like that MBBS teaches to manage 'dis-ease'!A human being is equipped with emotional and logical capability. While the logic can evolve with support of outside training, the emotion is left to evolve by itself, exposing to all the vulnerabilities of the outside situation, which is ever unpredictable! The silver lining is the very urge to ask such a question! There is that self-awareness, which is perceiving what is happening to the 'self''!Usually, religious preachers used to take care of this emotional aspect to stabilise a person. All those 'ambiguous' looking teachings aim at maintaining the inner emotional balance, using the 'trust' in the unseen Greater Power, to whom we are asked to bow! It seems very difficult to logically evaluate all those teachings, and it is therefore that a few people seem to Challenge such 'beliefs'.If there is sufficient trust in one's own religious path, there have been very great beings, who have left behind a legacy of precious teachings, which can provide such training to control our emotions. But to get started, it would be very fortunate to have a genuine spiritual guide. A person can evolve by oneself, but it requires greater involvement, and persistence ( tenacity is a better word!).A simple solution would be to watch such emotions with a little space within ourselves, and see that 'bad' happenings are simply beyond our control. A deep sense of 'acceptance' would allow us to have a fair control on our emotions. When emotions overpower us, logic fails to that extent. And with weaker logic, we become vulnerable to outside situation.
Best wishes,

Joy of Success!

At times, I actually end up destroying joy of others!
Somebody asked a question, inviting joyous instances where success appears abruptly, and a bit unexpectedly.
I was really surprised that my answer seemed to appeal to him!

Do you have ever experienced the joy of success?
We daily face a variety of situations that need to be tackled. They may be simple or complex problems.Recently I tackled successfully a problem that has been evading me for several days.I am a beginner and just learning operation of a computer. To have online transactions I obtained ID,log in and transaction passwords from my bank. I tried several times to log in but every time I tried it came back saying try again. I was frustrated and decided to have a last attempt before asking for an experts help. While I was following the guidelines step by step I noticed the check boxes on the left and clicked them for the first time and pressed the submit button. To my dismay that has worked and I had access to my account. OOH what a relief and joy and confidence it gave me!. You too may have similar experiences which you can share with us.

My answer:
Yes, had very similar situations. But the joy was a bit short lived. The very next thought was about being thoughtless! A mere glance with an empty mind would have shown us what was there all along! The joy is now about the clarity that occurred that we do not see deep enough! When somebody proved that earth is not flat, but round, surely some of the better intelligent ones would have felt a bit bad about themselves feeling 'why did it not occur to me earlier?' It was round all along! And when it rotates, it ought to be round, logically. The possibility of it being flat was only when the movement was straight not revolving! But the computer world present many such situations where the joy is sudden! When I used to present some short-cut keys, or when the 'auto-text' is invoked to repeat some predefined complex key strokes, the time taken is reduced drastically! Colleagues used to experience joy and sorrow together intensely! Why was I not told of this earlier is the question that causes that sorrow!Anyway, what you narrated is a wonderful experience and very interesting and indeed thought provoking.

The choice of asker never seemed to really deter me since the very process of answering is too rewarding.
Your kind comments is a bonus!

Wish Bone!

It is wonderful to have our wishes fulfilled! Yet, there is a challenge, what to wish for, and never have to regret for it. There have been great legendary stories of people who wished for wrong things and got into trouble!

There are very good techniques in the form of guided meditations to even actualise wishes! But for an answer to a question on Yahoo Answers forum, it seemed exciting to give it a try!

I quote my answer below. Please do try, at least within yourself, though for fun. And if you are inclined, I welcome feed backs to point out any shortcomings in my answer.

If you could change one thing to make the world a better place, what would it be?
If you could change one thing to make the world a better place, what would it be? How would this change improve the world? Please don't put a random answer just to get points.

My answer:

It is almost like a sure fulfillment of 'any' one wish!
And that wish, if it comes true, has to do the maximum good!
Well, then, let this change happen: "Let all the people get rid of all their negative emotions for ever!"
The rest would follow.
Just 4 negative emotions: Anger, hatred, jealousy and fear!
Every living human would become a pure being overnight!
The hidden, incognito Great Beings, with and without physical bodies would simply surface and manifest the big way. The line of demarcation limiting what is supposed to exist as heaven would become an actual existential reality all over the universe!
No more "if we could change one thing" would be needed at all!
..Coming to the ground realities and practical aspect of life, to whatever extent, a person keeps these 4 emotions under check, life happens beautifully to that individual to that extent, what ever the outside situation. We do see people, though rare, maintaining that joyousness throughout. They are almost like living miracles!

Ingrazy means "Educated"!

There is a fancy amidst those innocent village folk, to call anyone who can flash a couple of English words as educated!
The asker has invoked a deeper look at even those certified educated, when they do not behave cohesively, in parlance to the degrees that they have been ‘awarded’ in recognition to their academic performances, and, despite the oath they take during convocation!
I thought it would be wiser to snatch away the ‘extended’ meaning of the word educated, and reassign it to that lesser important word ‘literate’ instead, to satisfy that asker friend. We are ‘nobody’ to take back the awarded degree! For that matter, we are helpless to even deal with those self-styled-Gurus!!

What would be your ‘take’ at it?

Is education solution for all?
But even educated person also lack in social awareness, even educated person are more selfish, not treated the women equally, asking dowry(not applicable for western people) ,lack of bravery,etc,etc,....then how can we say education is the solution for all? Where is the lacking?

Please let us not confuse education with literacy! The great mathematician Ramanujam, introduced his mother to his foreign visitor professor-friend, saying "This is my mother, well educated but not literate"!Literacy is an essential ingredient of education. Mainly because the purpose of education is to be more effective, productive and useful in a society. For this communication is essential. And this communication needs literacy. This literacy is essentially the language well understood by others, not a foreign jargon! Same is true for all sciences like maths, physics, chemistry, economics etc. For instance, even today, we struggle to grasp the "Vedic Mathematics" which is supposed to be very advanced one than what we learn in modern schools, but we are not “literate” enough in the concepts of the language and the application of that language which has "embedded" in a very high complexity, the multiple variations of intricate formulae! That is EXACTLY why the formulae in Vedic mathematics are called "Sutras" (literally sutra means a thread, using which a person can weave any type of garland with any kind of flowers! Like the thread, the sutras of vedic mathematics find very very deep applicability, and is available to Challenge the perceptional skills of the student, professor etc!!!!). We can try to look at literacy thus, and can distinguish education easily!

De-Bugging (Q.A.)

I have an irksome nature within me. There is a tendency to look at my ‘self’, when I notice any phenomenon that could snowball into a concept on the ‘outside’ (the life situation around me). It would have been quite alright if it stopped there. But when I find somebody who is likely to be inclined to look at it in an ‘afresh’ manner, I find myself now ‘engaged’ in sharing this pattern! A great Master’s words gave me that much needed consolation, when he said (in some other context) that “there is a prototype of the whole Universe right within us!

Exactly this “pattern sharing” was what happened when I got initiated into the world of computers way back in 1991. Most of our colleagues were shying away, feeling that they are now too old to adapt to this new concept of information technology. I somehow landed at a nearby University, where, 3 PhD level professors had enough ‘quality’ spare time to garner a modest additional income resource to that infant University. The computer department was yet to become really busy. My ‘wiser’ colleagues looked at us (the handful of ‘over enthusiasts’) as even innocent and willing scapegoats! Very soon, these professors decided to make a thorough job of it, and went a little deeper than perhaps needed, into fundamentals. ‘GW Basics’ was of course there. But the lecture took us to the very junk-looking characters of low-level-language (may be the machine-language), the embedded circuit below the keypad etc. The binary form popped up too often, even during those data-transmission classes, with the concept of data packets, check-sum/symbols, parity bit, or whatever! Most of the participants found these classes to be an excellent source of invoking a quick nap after that hectic, stressful day at our work place! I was a front-bencher, an odd-man-enthusiast and sole source of inspiration for the professors! Even I was not spared, when my classmates used their ‘whip’ (they were my bosses at work place!), to warn me “not to ask any question during the last quarter hour”, that warrants an ‘extended’ session! I sneaked in this problem to professors who readily understood and volunteered for a one-to-one ‘after-class-session’ to satisfy my thirst! One professor was in for a surprise. He almost confessed that he was never prepared for that surprising revelation, when I suggested looking at….. how man happens to ‘replicate’ the ‘pattern’ of one’s own mind, when he devices a gadget like memory machine called computer! The data-supplements I offered in support of this theory, the examples in particular, happened to impress him and interested him very much. Even the ‘de-bugging’ concept was, an ‘embedded software’ in that ‘time-capsule’ when I happened to study this aspect of the famous ‘Soundarya Lahari’ by Adi Shankara. There was the data-compression technique, where alphabets were assigned numeric values(to incorporate scientific formulae), while refusing to dilute the poetic appeal, but also ensuring the concept of quantum mechanics phenomenon, the sound of chanting it effecting a miniature virtual ‘bombardment’ on the grey matter in the medulla oblongata (or whatever we call for brain, intellect, memory etc!). It is around 1971 that I came to know of ‘self-corrective-factors’ being embedded in the ‘prescribed number times of chanting’ of these verses! Very close to artificial intelligence, perhaps! So, obviously, when I gave hints at such credible instances, these PhD professors were understandably impressed.

The de-bugging concept dawned on me only when we were asked to ‘test’ our own primitive simple programs, by deliberately giving junk/wrong/incorrect inputs while running the program! I was reminded of “to err is human”….. ‘only’ too? If another machine or even an animal is going to provide inputs, too much of de-bugging would not be needed in a program! I suddenly liked to look at our being ‘prone-to-commit-mistakes’ as an invaluable asset! It affords scope for improvisations, innovations beyond imagination! We have those fool-proof, tamper-proof, child-proof gadgets! Hacker-proof is something that might be ever elusive! The marketing technology department imposes an ever increasing demand on its R & D wing for reducing the Do’s and Don’ts on latest models of gadgets! Nothing but de-bugging! I love to watch the materialistic world struggling with ‘debugging’ while the ancient spiritual giants had resolved this conclusively, when they had already perfected a technique long ago to evolve into a bug-proof-human being!

In search of Truth!

Right now, ‘The ultimate truth’, to many of us, seems quite far off. So, there is no point in trying to stretch our hands to reach out towards that straight away. May be we can try out to look at the simple impediments that we can readily see, and then try to improve upon it. If nothing else, I am sure the immediate benefits are tangibly worthy enough!

When we look at a child who has just learnt to talk, we find the use of ‘pronoun’ like ‘I’, ‘me’, etc coming up a bit late. This is because the concept formation tries to catch up a bit late. And when we ask a child questions like “Why do you like sweets?”, there will be only a blank look!

As adults, we communicate a lot amongst ourselves, at home, office, on the street, etc. There is a unique difference between the ‘chat’ content of adults and that of children.
This particular unique aspect mostly goes un-noticed! Children notice it, but being unable to understand it, it remains a bit latent within their innocent minds, and by the time they grow into adulthood they too get inextricably enmeshed in this game! This unique aspect is that we adults try to justify everything that we do! We ‘assume’ that we are simply trying to ‘explain’ to avoid that ‘misunderstanding’ about us in others, by explaining our ‘sequence of logic’ which led us to do something (either commission or omission of actions). There are a few people who do not insist upon offering too much of explanations of this kind. Over a period of time, these ‘explanations’ become almost like a nuisance to others. But they simply and quietly put up with it (perhaps, because they know that even they are not entirely free from it!).

When children chat, please look at their talk-content. They simply express their experience and leave it at that. They do not volunteer any further explanation of ‘because…’ etc. When children hear the parents, they find explanation for everything that parents do (especially for things they failed to do or did it wrong!). This explanation does not stay as innocent explanation. It assumes the look of justification! Initially, children trust the elders and feel that adults seldom go wrong (they are able to ‘explain’ so well every instance!). Now as these children grow, they get a feel of the truth. They understand these ‘explanations’ now too well! It could be justifications most of the times. It is very flexible, and can change to any extent, only to suit the person who uses it! The resentment is held back and kept suppressed till they gain that ‘freedom’ from parents. And then there is no looking back! But, sadly enough, they too get caught up in this game before even they realize it! Children lose trust on their parents to a great extent, when they realize that all along, the parents had been playing that ‘patch-up-game’ justifying every action of theirs, in the name of explanation! Parents wonder when, how and why their children become suddenly ‘disobedient’! And then, there is the consolation …….there is a pattern in the ‘present’ generation! “Oh! We were not like that!”. And soon enough, history repeats! Perhaps, the worst fall out of this ‘tendency to explain everything’ is a drop in ‘open-minded-receptivity’ ability, and as a consequence, also a drop in perceptibility!

It takes lots of effort to get rid of this nasty habit of trying to justify everything that we do. Confessing our errors of judgment is too painful and not adequate even. It may be too late, and perhaps redundant. It is the tendency to ‘explain’ that has to be brought into our ‘conscious acts’ as a first small step. If we try to do it all of a sudden, there could be a sort of vacuum in our communications. Something like everybody becoming needlessly silent when power goes off at night time!

If my theory seems any where near acceptability, there is a lot of scope to do something else about that ultimate truth!Psn(10th October, 2009)

The Pink Slip!

My earliest memories goes, touches my childhood, when I happened to get a glimpse of this ‘pink slip’! It was just a memory of something ‘odd’ that I noticed. So the concept was not clear.
My data base of memory is a bit quixotic! When people usually struggle to sift between that bitter residues (which they misconstrue to be memory), and something that they failed, despite concerted effort, full of struggle, to commit into memory, my memory ‘about that memory itself’ seemed to be fairly clear! It is only during the later years that I could realize the worth of this clarity!

Be that as it may, let us get down to pink slips. My father narrated a very odd incident(I was a kid, about 6 to 8 years old, and hence quite inconspicuous among elders who were the targeted audience!). One of his subordinates at his work place, requested my father to fire him! This fellow was very efficient, trusted, trustworthy, loyal, sincere, punctual, alert etc. Just that he was illiterate, or else, he would have gone places! And he was very much attached to my father, like his own brother! That was the very reason why he asked my father to fire him! Sounds strange, isn’t it! Yes, everybody felt it only that way, and logically an accurate deduction. Except that, it seems, his people would look down upon him if he gave up the job (quitting, resigning, etc!), and there fore this request! He gave very valid reasons for his desire to quit, and my father did readily oblige him, taking the bare minimum care of any possible repercussions for that ‘unethical’ act of firing an ideal employee!

Then I read stories (like the puranic ones, Mahabharata), where, Vidura gladly awaited for that pink slip to join the righteous side of pandavas. The story of his birth would amply convince us why he was so fastidious about that less paid job!

It also occurred to me that Adi Shankara, too had to ‘extract’ the pink slip from his mother to extricate himself from normal duties and responsibilities!

So far, I got inputs about people who ‘sought’ pink slips! Then came instances, where pink slips were issued most unexpectedly! The worst instances that I noticed were those when I heard of ‘untimely’ demise of known people around!

By the time age ripened me, I was fairly ready to confront that pink slip.

Something stirred up the earliest of my memories, and now it is conclusively resolved, when I could remove the ‘oddity’ attached to that memory. I am full of admiration for that barely lettered employee who ‘sought’ it in right earnest, unable to bring it upon himself to forsake his loyalty and commitment! I am not too sure if he was aware of the immense value that he so effortlessly carried when he decided to adhere to the tradition that he believed in! I am not very sure if this tradition was traceable to his community or just his class! But for me, this was yet another instance of benediction being showered by sheer force of adherence to tradition!

I am now inclined to go hi-tech, right within me, to seek for pink slips! The manifest form may seem crude, illogical, etc. But ‘mystic’ is the ancient name for it. The last lap of evolvement has to happen by itself. The dissolution. The pink slip from our bondages! The more that awareness creeps in, this sense of commitment presents itself in all its complexities, making that extrication almost an impossibility! Torn between the ‘desire’ to be free from desires, the desire to seek pink slips from all our commitments, our sense of loyalty, the pain is deepest and very unfortunately the sweetest to forgo! Mercifully enough, people around me are very charitable when it comes to giving out the pink slips to me! All I have to learn is to manage the ‘love’ that I feel for them, when I see their innocence about it! I could muster courage to give verbal shape to the battles within me, only when I had a fair sense of control over the outcome of the war! Perhaps, it will at least amuse a few of us, reading this!

Bifocal vision (not lenses or spectacles)!

Please bear with me and try to find a way to forgive me, if the answer to this rare type of question sounds a bit mystic. To my humble knowledge, experience seems to be the only way to de-mystify the phenomenon to its full extent. Yet there is always that inquisitiveness to ask, and a still greater eagerness to struggle with the words to find an appropriate answer!
I would take a chance with my dear readers, what ever it takes!

Spiritually speaking... what is one to do when one's consciousness incorporates a wider vision of itself......?
...and one's physical focus feels threatened?

My answer:
There are only two possible situations where this could occur.
One is under the direct supervision of an experienced spiritual master. Under this situation, there is no reason to worry about any threat to one's physical focus. It would not happen, and the sense of security that the master would offer due to proximity is overwhelming enough to ensure any apprehensions creeping in.
The second possibility (this is perhaps why even such a question itself gets prompted to be asked!) is that this could occur naturally. Naturally meaning, own efforts whether consciously or otherwise, awares or unawares, due to that rare support of the situation. A typical example would be, we have seen growth of a small plant due to some bird dropping the seed of a fruit into the crevice of a huge tree, Then wind brings dust, mud into that crevice formed by the branches , the rain drops providing the moisture etc. How far that plant would grow is quite speculative, depending upon the type and variety of seed etc. This is just an indicative example, not to be taken too literally. When such widening of that 'vision' occurs, the physical body has to be capable of enduring the 'effects' of such widening, and there is no basis for even a doubt to occur, regarding threat to that 'physical focus'. All that a person could do is to rejoice it, struggle to retain that wider vision, and impatiently struggle to get it back!

There is also a third situation, about which I am a bit hesitant to mention here, since it would seem too incredible, but suffice it to say, that it is a subtle combination of the first two types! The experience is 'deluxe' (like we differentiate those public transport buses from 'ordinary' and 'deluxe' !)
I am very pleasantly surprised at the very question. It is I who owes any gratitude for the chance to even look at the question!

The ‘Brighter aspect of ‘darkness’

The asker is perhaps not even aware that not all are able to ‘sense’ like this in pitch dark. Some of them just ‘hallucinate’ too.
It requires something else to feel thus!
But I can ‘feel’ from the question, that the asker did experience it!
All I can do is to gently and suggestively persuade a conscious effort to ‘seek’ for more of it, even in broad daylight!

Though I am not very sure, how many of us would really care to take it even with ‘a pinch of salt’ , I was simply so impressed by the innocent looking question, that I couldn’t help sharing it with you.

question:
In a dark room, why can people feel the presence of others?
Why is it that in a pitch black room, even without hearing breathing or any noise, people can still sense the presence of another human being? What are we sensing?

My attempt to de-mystify the mystic phenomenon (the answer)
Not everybody is fortunate to have that kind of 'sensing'. It happens in a pitch dark room, is just because we insist on getting ourselves focused too much on the 'seeing' through the eye, which is now forcibly switched off! Once a person is curious and intense, such people can even try it out in broad daylight, and it opens up new dimensions, perception beyond sensory levels! Since times immemorial, spiritual masters have been trying to simplify and make available the techniques to more people around, to make others too see beyond the limited 'self'. Basically, with sustained practice, the first thing we can 'feel' is our own very selves, simply because we know we are there very much even when it is pitch dark. Then we feel, and know by means of our own experience that we are not limited to remaining just within our body!In simple terms, if we are sure that we are sensing 'something' which we know for sure that it is not through the sense organs itself, then we can be assured that we need not anymore just blindly believe that there 'could' be perception levels beyond the sensory levels. We 'know' now that it is possible! Not everyone will easily agree with this! Please also try to see, the 'logical' aspect of our own mind does not subscribe to this 'theory' though it is an 'experience'. To such fortunate people, all we can say is, 'Welcome, to the world of spirituality'!

The Mask

There was a joke.
It seems once, a zookeeper found one of the animals ‘missing’ from its cage. It was a Bear. The cage was at a prominent place in that zoo, and the supervisor would notice it too soon! To avoid any problem till the bear could be located, the zookeeper found a well-built volunteer, offered him a sizeable sum of money, gave him a bear-skin mask, and told him what to do inside the cage. Our ‘dummy’ did a wonderful job, and visitors to the zoo did not notice anything amiss.
Towards night, our dummy felt the need to relieve himself very urgently, and since it was dark, decided no harm in letting himself out of the cage for a while. But while returning, he happened to choose the wrong cage! He did not realize his mistake for a while. It was when he decided to find a cozy corner to sleep, that he looked around, to only find another huge creature sharing his cage! He could make out that it did look like that Lion! The bear skin could not hold the sweat that he started to profusely emit! He was also shivering due to fear! He managed to hold himself still, waiting for day break! Any slight movement might provoke that massive creature waiting so close!
When day light came, he found to his shocking surprise that the “Lion” was also in a similar grip of fear, sweat and shiver! He was also a ‘dummy’ !

When we wear similar masks, trying to be something when we are not really capable of being one, the problem is further complicated! The deep fear, clothed with an ego problem, manifests in the form of even ‘superiority complex’, undue harassment upon others, extra control on others, needless suspicion on juniors, superiors etc and what not!

Those of us who can draw comfort from reconciling to one type of acceptance that we are prepared to take things as it comes, without worrying too much about ‘what four people will think’ also are vulnerable in yet another arena! The vulnerability is not from outside! It is from within, our own selves! A well educated, evolved daughter poured out this ‘helplessness’ in a very magnificent manner, enough to occupy a significant mention in the prominent week end edition of a widely circulated national newspaper! This lady could not forgive herself for having failed to notice the earliest symptoms of a dreaded ailment that had crept into her dearest Mom!
This time, the ‘mask’ is right on her very own eyes! By a different name ‘pre-conditioned’ eyes!

Evaluation is too strong a word. Awareness, in its deeper sense would take care of this. Human being undergoes the consequences of lack of this, to the proportional extent. Awareness would help deepening the perception.

When present day youngsters tend to look down upon the simple lifestyles of our ancient people, they fail to take notice of their perceptional capabilities! A recent Giant, one of the Shankaracharyas, when he was yet to become one, demonstrated this capability right within himself, having observed it through his inner eyes, from ancient Masters. The brief preface about the author in the book ‘Vedic Mathematics’ would give details of ‘how’ and ‘what’ he did.
The sutras that he narrated in the book are too brief, terse, and have the potential to be infallibly interpreted so as to accommodate many of the concepts of our modern mathematics, in a ‘micro-chip’ fashion! Just 16 miniature ‘surtas’ like “Ekadhikena poorvena”(Sanskrit for ‘one more than the previous) etc! (‘Sutra’ literally means a thread, and whatever flower we use to weave, the thread holds the garland well!). Please try to visualize, if these brief 16 formulas are enough to solve almost all mathematical problems under the sun, then are they not giving us sufficient competition to try for a better ‘pen-drive’/lap-top/calculator etc?

Armed with such deep vision, to just look and grasp things around, and then to infallibly ‘apply’ the right formula in its right mixture of derived complexities, are they going to miss anything worth noticing around them! This perception is what I had in mind, when I wrote a fictional post on the blog, using that simple looking equation, 4 x 4 = 16.

The next level of the mask is on our mind itself! A preconditioned mind! The causes are multiple, since the inputs are incessant, and the processor too is racing all the time, unmindful of that pure awareness being deprived of its ‘due’ share of prominence! Most of my blog-post hover around this aspect one way or other, so it is redundant to stretch any further.

Why truth seems to hurt!

A very brief answer is all that is needed. Thin clothing to give predominance to truth, to the extent possible!
Psn ( 26th Sept, 2009)
http://in.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090924184827AAFcyfZ

Truth is the truth hurts, Don't you agree?

My answer:

I am inclined to say, "may be, yes".When we try to remove a thorn from our feet's sole or so, the needle hurts more (due to the presence of that thorn), than the way the same needle would hurt elsewhere. When the doctor applies that magical liquid on the skin the syringe needle does not hurt at all!
"Truth" by itself is like an invisible person, who can be seen with the clothing that is put on that invisible person(remember......that English movie "Hollow Man"). A heavy clothing obscures the person all the more. A thin clothing gives clear 'idea' but still, it is the clothing that we see, not that invisible person. As long as we have to look at the clothing, truth might hurt.

A desire to create THE desire!

While the bulk lot of us are busy with just trying to fulfil our own desires, chasing them, running after them, pursuing them etc, it was interesting to find somebody who wanted to know how and when would a desire to pursue something woud arise! And when that something was the ultimate goal of a spiritual pursuit, what I felt was ‘gratifying’, way beyond ‘interesting’.
My answer, I know would not have done much help to ‘create’ any such desire. But it looks like he or she got some clarity.

I was wondering if we too did try sometime to create a desire about something first , and then try to pursue that desire. We would have tried it on those innocent children, the sitting ducks at our homes, when we try to create an interest in them to somehow score high marks in the exams! The marketing in-charge tries to create a desire in his sales-team to reach a target. A shop keeper tries to create an interest in us in some new gadget. Brooke Bond, (I was told by an elder from an instance that happened when he was a kid), it seems, came early in the morning with a mobile van unit, and offered Tea to people in the village. Later, they insisted that the free-morning-cup of tea would be given only if they brushed their teeth well, and cleaned their tongue sharp. Once they got addicted, the cost factor came in to stay and rise for ever!
I know from personal experience, how difficult it is to get somebody interested into spirituality. They may settle easily to talk about it a lot. And then drop out inconspicuously, but to get them into it, and retain them so, is an arduous task.

Desire to attain enlightenment comes to a find of full matured mind is that True, then in what sense?
My answer:
True, but the problem is, we do not have that measuring rod to find out if the mind was really a matured one!
Most of the enlightened people in India were unlettered!Enlightenment has happened at all ages to these people.
It has happened to people irrespective of what they did for it in terms of concerted efforts!
At all stages.
'Just like that' cases, and after 'great struggle' cases too!Statistically, enlightenment is about one in ten thousand or even much more.
This maturity of the mind can happen quite early too.
That is what I attempted to 'hint' at when I wrote a 'post' in my blog under the title 'Evaluation Copy'. Seeking a person's attention towards this priority is too difficult. The body has its priorities. The mind has its priorities. The mind has to first tame the body, and then surrender itself unconditionally to the 'subtle' being within! That is what maturity is about. It is too an abstract a concept, to be explained with the help of tangible examples! But the question is excellent. It comes from a genuine urge to 'create' that desire first, and then to work towards it, when there is an 'acceptance', an honest one, that our logic does not right now permit us to view it even, as anything worth one's while!
